What Happens When You Drink Too Much Water

Drinking water is essential for maintaining proper hydration and overall health. However, it’s possible to drink too much water, which can lead to a condition known as water intoxication or hyponatremia.

When you drink too much water, the sodium concentration in your blood can become diluted, which can cause an imbalance in your body’s electrolyte levels. Symptoms of water intoxication can include headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, seizures, and in severe cases, coma or death.

Water intoxication is rare and typically occurs in people who quickly consume large amounts of water, such as athletes or people participating in water-drinking contests. However, it’s still important to be mindful of your water intake and avoid drinking excessive water.

The amount of water a person needs can vary depending on factors such as body weight, activity level, and climate. Aiming for at least 8-10 glasses (or 2-2.5 litres) of water per day is recommended as a general guideline. However, listening to your body’s thirst signals and drinking water as needed throughout the day is important.
