Birmingham, August 6 (SO News/Agency) Indian wrestlers are performing well in Commonwealth Games 2022. After female wrestler Anshu Malik won silver, wrestler Bajrang Punia and female wrestler Sakshi Malik bagged gold for Malik. India’s top gold hopeful Bajrang Punia defeated Canada’s McNeil Lachlan to win the gold medal on Friday.
Gold Coast 2018 Games gold medalist and Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bijring thrashed his opponent 9-2 in the men’s 65kg category final. Bajrang, a bronze medalist at Tokyo Olympics 2020, started pressing from the start of the match while Lachlan looked ineffective in front of him.
Meanwhile, 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik bagged gold in the 62 kg category. Sakshi Malik staged a stunning comeback in the final against Canada’s Anna Gonzalez to win gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Sakshi was trailing 4-0 at the end of the first half but made a strong comeback in the second half. Sakshi took down Gonzalez twice first to level the match at 4-4, and then defeated her opponent to win her first Commonwealth Games gold medal.
India has so far won three medals in wrestling, including two gold and one silver. Earlier, Anshu Malik won the silver medal in the women’s 57 kg category. Young wrestler Anshu Malik had to settle for a silver medal in the women’s 57kg final after losing to Nigeria’s Odunaye Adekuroye. O’Donoghue, a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist, defeated Anshu 6-4. Anshu cried after his defeat. With these three medals, India’s medal tally stands at 23, including 8 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze.
