Commonwealth Games: Deepak Punia also wins gold, defeating Pakistani wrestler Inam


Birmingham, August 6 (SO News/Agency) Indian freestyle wrestler Naib Subidar Deepak Punia won the gold medal by defeating Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam in the men’s 86 kg final at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

World Wrestling Championship 2019 silver medalist Deepak Punia defeated Inam 3-0. Deepak managed to put pressure on the Delhi 2010 Games gold medalist Inam in the opening moments of the match.

On the other hand, Inam, 10 years older than Deepak, could not match the agility of the Indian wrestler and failed to score a single point.

Earlier, Sakshi Malik (Women’s 62kg) and Bajrang Punia (Men’s 65kg) won gold while Anshu (Women’s 57kg) bagged the silver.

With this win, India’s total in wrestling has gone up to 4, with 26 medals in Birmingham 2022. India has won 9 golds, 8 bronzes and 9 bronzes so far. India is fifth in the medal tally with 26 medals ahead of Scotland and South Africa.

On Saturday i.e. today, the Indian women’s cricket team will take on England in the semi-finals and if they win, India will be assured of at least a silver medal.
